A troublesome spin-off of family breakup is the incidence of parental kidnapings—action by one parent to remove a child or children from any contact with the other parent. This is a kind of illegal self-help which is sometimes practiced with great sophistication.

There is an "underground railroad" of persons willing to assist in the abduction and harboring of children, particularly where the abducting parent alleges sexual or physical abuse of the child or children by the other parent.

This is supported in some places by psychological and/or medical professionals determined to substitute their judgment—and that of the accusing parent—for the determinations of family courts.

In other cases, the abductors are acting strictly alone and are simply attempting to impose their will on both the child or children and the other parent.

It is the very absence of any court oversight and control that makes these situations dangerous. They typically take place in defiance of the custody or visitation rights of the other parent, as set forth in court orders. Frequently they involve the conscious intention to "hide out," which essentially makes fugitives of the children. In other cases, there is little attempt at deception or concealment, because crossing state lines is seen as protection enough from any attempt of the other parent to reclaim the children.
